Curriculum:  english@work
Introduction

“The first impression is the best impression” is an oft heard statement. The elements that works toward the best impression the first time are – clear communication and confident self-presentation. For a fresh entrant aspiring to enter into the new generation workforce, these two elements therefore become critical to create that first impression.

A good understanding of the English language enables clear communication. Understanding the finer nuances of situations enables the student towards confident self-presentation.

In addition, students also come to NIIT for IT career education which should help them secure a placement. They become proficient in their IT skills; however at the time of interviews employers have felt a gap in their communication and self-presentation/grooming abilities.

This program titled “English@work” aims to fill these gaps. The objective of this program is to:

  • Enhance fluency in English with the aim to help the student to confidently face career and interview situations.

This program achieves its objectives through a 108 hour program. These 108 hours of the english@work program included Grammar, Listening, Pronunciation and Vocabulary.

The 108 hour program is bifurcated into two programs: the main program of 108 hours for learners with poor linguistic abilities. For learners having basic linguistic abilities, a 72 hour subset of the main 108 hour program caters to the requirement. (For more details, refer to the graphic below).

Part I of the e@w program will enable the participants to produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest, without expertise of speaking or writing long passages.
Part II of the e@w program includes Advanced Grammar, Speaking, and Listening, Vocabulary, Reading comprehension and Basic writing skills.

Some important highlights of this new english@work program are:

  • MR-Home-CR-based Delivery Methodology: the delivery methodology follows a MR-Home-CR cycle.

This enables the learner to use the computer-based training to understand and assimilate the concepts before learning to apply and hone the concepts further through practice

  • Interactive computer-based learning for core concepts – The interactive tool follows an expert based approach where the learner can practice concepts and also compare self-learning against expected achievements based on expert inputs.

  • Concept of “Themes”:  the concept of themes such as to  describing childhood experiences and abilities, Comparing Things, Discussing Progress of events, Talking about sudden or memorable events, Applying for a job etc enable the learner to place themselves in given personal/professional situations and thereby practice the application of the concepts learnt and apply them to given situations.
  • Focus on Practice-based learning in the Machine room, at Home and in the class room – repeated practice sessions while learning on the computer and practice of exercises based on real-life situations in the classroom, provide the required confidence to the learner to face personal/professional situations.

  • Useful Tips: First Impressions, Vocabulary List and Grammar Notes:  structured inputs on first impressions provide the learner with inputs on expected behavior and appropriate responses in situations. It also provides the learner with tips on expected self-presentation. The vocabulary list and grammar notes aid in enhancing the learning of the English language.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This program is not geared for language skills needed for call centre employment such as Accent Neutralization

The MR session, with the help of Computer Based Training Session, enabled delivery of basic concepts to the learner

The home session has exercises for the learner. These exercises are provided as a part of the student guide. The learner is expected to complete these exercises at home.  The home exercises enable the learner to build upon the concepts learnt in the MR session.

The CR session is structured to enable a recap of the concepts learnt and practiced as a part of the MR and Home sessions. The CR session also provides a platform for the student to practice on real-life situations for conversation, discussions and general personal and work interactions.
